Jacob, Host at Logistics Degree:
Question: What does operations management entail and what would be a few jobs within that field?

Nathan, Logistician:
Answer: Operations Management is typically you’re running a warehouse or a production line, a manufacturing line. So the jobs that you’re going to see there are supervisor roles which you’d be managing a team of people. So if you’re very interested in people management, that’s a good place to go.

Alexander, Supply Chain & Procurement:
Answer: Operations management. It really entails executing processes that have been created or creating new processes more towards business processes. I think there’s really two sides of operations management as well, which is the logistics side and the manufacturing side. So in my previous experience, I did a four month rotation and operations. I was more on the logistics side and I was an operations analyst. So that job, mostly in analyzing all of our orders to make sure that they arrive to the customer and real time tracking solutions and also if there are any returns, if the product did not arrive, correct, if there was damage handling that return merchandise as well, kind of handling the whole process from filling out everything that needs to be filled out on the invoice to get it on the truck again and then on our same trucking company to and get it back to our manufacturing facility and handle that and whether we dispose of it or whether we don’t need it. I would even say analyzing other job functions within supply chain so operations management can even analyze the procurement process a little bit. How can we make it more efficient between the communication of procurement and operations and supply chain demand planning?

Corben, Supply Chain Manager:
Answer: That’s where you want to be as efficient as possible. So you’re managing the operations as it says. Operations are just day to day what the business is doing. So one example, there is actually a client who is a delivery service for a very, very large retail e-commerce brand that I won’t name, but it’s very large. And so he organizes a fleet of vans, so he just his company has a bunch of vans and he manage all the operations of how those vans get the products from the warehouse to each consumer’s home.

William, Director of Operations:
Answer: That’s kind of the catch all I would say. Let’s just use supply chain as the broad scope. And you have supply chain operations which could be running a plant. So you could be a plant manager. It could be running like what I do, running the project operations. Operations is a pretty, pretty wide scope.
